I wonder why the trio decided to steal supplies from Snape instead of
sending Hedwig off to London with a purchase order?

It's not like Harry couldn't afford it!

Erk... sorry... forgot to mention they were making the Polyjuice
Potion and the only ingredients they needed to get were Bicorn Horn
and Boomslang Skin... which they stole.

Why not take the easy route and buy them?

I can think of a couple possible reasons....

1. They may have been restrictive... like must have teacher's note or must
be in 5th year. When I was a kid I had a chemistry set but most of the
chemicals where boring so I bought some more interesting ones. I wanted some
Sulfuric acid but they wouldn't sell it to me because it was a "class b or
c" or something like that and I was only 13. I lied to my dad and said I
wanted to make some hydrogen with it and he bought it for me.

2. It could have taken too much time... Another chemical I wanted as a kid
was Cobalt chloride. It wasn't restrictive but I had to special order it,
which took some time. Remember in book 6 when Ron and Harry needed books and
how long it took.

I'm curious... What did you want to use the sulfuric acid for?

Although a different person - when I was young - I was into
electroplating - which uses BOTH Sulfuric acid and Cyanide.

Time? The sooner they get it, they sooner they star, and the sooner
it's ready a month later.

If Harry et al ordered those items, wouldn't alarm bells go off at the MoM? (Harry et al needed to make the Polyjuice potion in SECRET).

I have always woundered that one as well. It is right up there with why
didn't harry get a few of the poisen antidote things he used on ron. He
knew he might get something slipped to him and yet he did no pervention
or safty items.
That always bothered me.

Yeah since a Bezoar is only the size of a nutmeg you'd think they'd be
something Hermione carried with her in the little beaded bag!

Of course none got poisoned so we don't *know& she didn't, but bearing
in mind there were Death Eaters all round the UK looking for Harry
you'd think he'd have taken the elementary precaution of carrying some
'just in case'... not to mention understanding basic magical first
aid!

Having said that, it's only on re-reading the books that I've realised
just how constrained Harry's world really was before DH. He left the
Dursleys to go to Hogwarts, and apart from the occasional excursion to
Hogsmeade that was all he knew.

There was the trip to the graveyard in GoF... but otherwise only those
few locations!

Harry had that bag that hold everything. Put a few in there.
Everybody should have 5 or 6, just in case.

Or the real mad eyes ways of staying alive.
All thoes shops and harry never once looks for things that would help him or
even be just a bit of fun. Heck even ron wanted to get a lot of things at
the twins shop. But Harry who can take anything only takes two items they
practicly force on him.

Since they were on the defensive book 7 why not make a stop at
Knockturn Alley and grab a few useful items?

I can see why they didn't do it at that point. It might have been to dangerous.
Unless they used the polyjuse potion and made themselves look like someone else.
The problem I have is that from the end of Book four, Harry knew who was back and
gunning for him. Heck after book one Harry knew some people didn't like him. I
would have thought he would have looked for things that would help him. I would
have. Even the time he spent three weeks in diogon alley in book three, harry
didn't look for things that could help him later. He also doesn't seam to trust
the dark detecters he knews of. I guess he never realized that they didn't mess
up, rather it was there ignoring them that made them usless. and from then on he
never trusted them.
But he never looks for anything to help him out.
