I'm sure that this was probably covered somewhere, but I as I don't
recall.....

What are the odds that Hepzibah Smith and Zacharias Smith are related?
I know that Smith in itself is a very common surname, but for both
characters to be mentioned by JKR and for both to be Hufflepuffs (no,
Hepzibah's house was never directly mentioned but she did mention that
she was related distantly to Helga Hufflepuff and that should be
enough of a tie-in).

Also, as Zacharias Smith has been mentioned a number of times (the
last time was when his father took him out of Hogwarts the day after
Dumbledore was killed), what are the odds that he will play some sort
of larger role in HD?

We already had a similar problem with Mark Evans, remember. Then Jo
admitted it had been a mistake. The question is "she did it again?". I
suppose this time she would be extra careful at choosing names .

They are probably related. Aside from the names, 'most UK wizards are
related'. I would suspect a relationship could be found somewhere
between any two UK purebloods, and many of the mixed blood ones.

Possible, but not too likely after the Mark Evans fiasco. (I was SOO
mad!!! :-)) Smith is a very common name, so we can't get too excited.
Zacharias probably will play a large part in DH though. I suppose we
could argue that is they are related he could play some part in
helping Harry get the cup, if that is in fact a horcrux... but it
seems a little far fetched to me. Good observation though.

Another relatioship: Bob Odgen and Tiberius Odgen, not mentioning "
Odgen´s old fire whisky"!

I, too, think it's very likely - I think I've asked this question on
here just after HBP came out. I don't think JKR would go to the
trouble of mentioning Zacharias or his father and giving us some idea
of their charateristics without using them in some form - unlike Mark
Evans, where we only knew a tiny bit about him. While she might be
planning something completely different, or her original plans for
them might have been abandoned (in the same way, for instance, as she
hasn't given Theodore Nott the role he might have played), a
connection looks likely, especially as some wizatding families appear
to adopt a single theme for family names. There's the Hufflepuff
connection, and the fact that Dumbledore mentions Hepzibah's heirs;
Harry's almost going to need to contact them to have any chance of
finding the Hufflepuff cup, whoever they are.

Yeah, I guess it would make sense, since he has been mentioned so
much. Especially since Mark Evans, she's probably being a lot more
careful with things like that. But let's not get our hopes up too
much.
