Why Sirius didn't remind Harry of the mirror...

Don't complain about spoilers in the subject line, this one doesn't make
sense to someone who hasn't read the book yet.

Anyway, people keep wondering why Sirius didn't remind Harry to use the
mirror he gave him, thinking it is a plot hole. Well, Harry gets the
mirror in the Occlumency chapter (page 462 Bloomsbury). If I'm not
mistaken Harry's only conversation with Sirius is in the Carrers Advice
chapter (page 589 Bloomsbury). When you reread this scene it makes
perfectly sense that Sirius didn't remind Harry to use the mirror next
time he wants to talk to him.

First of all Lupin is there all the time, maybe Sirius doesn't want
Lupin to know Harry has the mirror. He made a secret of it when he gave
it to Harry and definitely didn't want Mrs. Weasly to know. People could
worry Sirius might do something... rash... if Harry called him.

Let's view the course of the conversation. Harry's call is a surprise
and yet another surprise is that it doesn't seem to be an emergency.
Instead he wants to talk about his father, Sirius and Lupin begin to
dwell on memories of the good old days... it's not surprising that
Sirius doesn't immediately remind Harry to better use the mirror next
time. Then shortly after the next surprise, Snape discontinuing Harry's
occlumency training, Harry has to abruptly end the conversation.

I really don't see a plot hole in the fact that Sirius didn't get to
remind Harry of the mirror. So I stick with my theory that Harry easily
could have saved Sirius using the mirror instead of using umbridges
fireplace again. And that JKR included the mirror so that in HP6 Harry
will feel guilty for not having used it.

The mirror was still in the package, all wrapped up. Harry didn't know
about it until the last chapter when finally, he opened it.
I would of thought that he'd be kicking himself for using the fire and not
the mirror if he had known about it when he was looking for Sirius.
Instead he tries to contact a dead Sirius with it. . . I was confused there.

S: "Oh, and Harry, why are you using a fireplace? It's not safe, better
use the mirror next time."
H: "What mirror?"
S: "Goddamit Harry! Open that darn package I gave you!"
I'm sorry--this made me giggle hysterically. I just had a mental
image of Daniel Radcliffe and Gary Oldman doing the movie version of
this dialogue.
As for Harry not yet having realized that he could have saved Sirius had
he opened the package earlier, well, Harry's still in a state of shock
and too busy looking for others to blame (Snape for example). He'll
realize his tragic mistake and blame himself for Sirius' death in HP6.
Another side effect that would no doubt please Lord Thingy.

I admit to not being overly wild about book 5, but it did make me
quite anxious for book 6.

I think the mirror is a device to show that Sirius is REALLY dead.
Before he tried to use it, Harry was telling himself that perhaps he
wasn't, perhaps there was something behind the veil that he could get
to, perhaps he was just somewhere else in the world. But afterwards,
when he didn't reply.. well, he tried the "he wouldn't have had it
with him", but I don't think he convinced himself. It was the "Yes,
he IS dead" conclusion for him. Then, of course, the chance of him
coming back as a ghost is taken away.

Cheers

Plus, there are so many "if only's" in the books. If only Harry had told
Dumbledore earlier about his suspicions in PS/SS - Dumbledore would've
fought Quirell and maybe actually _killed_ V. If only Harry had told
Dumbledore about his hearing the Basilisk's voice earlier - Maybe
Dumbledore, being one of the greatest wizards of all time, would have
figured out what they were dealing with. If only they'd put Wormtail into a
jar, a box, etc., he wouldn't have escaped to help V. come back. If only
Harry'd remembered the mirror, or that Snape was in the Order, the kids
wouldn't have ended up at MoM, and Sirius wouldn't be dead...

If any of the things that've gone wrong in the books hadn't, Harry might've
had a chance to be "normal," and not the good guy's ultimate weapon. The
point is, for all of the stories to progress, there are mistakes made that
could've been, in retrospect, avoided. But then V. would've died in book
one and there wouldn't even be this ng. It's all about actions and
consequences, as has already been pointed out...
