Discussion:
A new thought on the James Potter/Head Boy issue

Okay, bare with me now as I have no idea how the Prefect/Head
boy(girl) system works as we have no equivilant to it in the States.

But, *if* a Head boy has to be chosen from the Prefects and we know
that James Potter was Head boy but not a prefect (SS/OoTP
respectively)is it possible that James was not the original head boy,
that the original head boy did something to lose his title and James
was chosen to be the replacement... for whatever reason?

Heck, maybe it was Snape (though I doubt it because I would think he'd
*really* hate Dumbledore afterwards) And this was just yet another
reason for him to hate James

It's a possible explanation, certainly.

But by far the most likely explanation is that, as in many (maybe even
most?) UK schools, being a Prefect is not a necessary precursor for being
Head Boy/Girl.

Occam's Razor, anyone?

Just about every school in the UK has it's own variation on the prefect
system.....It's not a hard and fast set of directives laid down by the
education authorities......If you're familiar with the prefect system in one
school and then move to another, you'd probably be confused for a while
until you got used to the new system.....

Maybe It came out Lupin was werewolf and had to give up being perfect then
James took over the position and became headboy.

Lupin's werewolfism didn't come out until the end of PoA.
