QUOTED FROM THE BOOK:
"Oh, you want to come back to Hogwarts, but you do not want to teach
any more than you wanted to when you were eighteen. What is it you're
after, Tom? Why not try an open request for once?"
Voldemort sneered. "If you do not want to give me the job-"
"Of course I don't," said Dumbledore. "And I don't think for a moment
you expected me to. Nevertheless, you came here, you asked, you must have
had a purpose."
<snip>
For a second, Harry was on the verge of shouting a pointless warning:
He was sure that Voldemort's hand had twitched toward his pocket and his
wand; but then the moment had passed, Voldemort had turned away, the door
was closing, and he was gone.
END QUOTE

I'm thinking Voldemort stole an item that he later used for a horcrux. I
foolishly loaned out my previous HP books to a friend who hasn't read a word
of the series so far. Is there any mention of items that have gone missing
from Dumbledore's office during his tenure there in the previous books? Any
mention of an item that he used to have but no longer does?

Everyone is assuming that the items must belong to the four founders, but
Voldy would probably love a Dumbledore item as a horcrux. I could be wrong
but I'd wager cash that Voldemort's "twitch" is significant in some way.

Good point... I don't recall any mention of something going missing but I'd
have to review my books again...

Or maybe he set something up in DDs office to used as a Horcrux - hiding it
in plain sight so to speak.

Remember, Voldy didn't come looking for a job when he running around
killing people. This scene took place decades earlier, before Harry
was born. Harry never visited Dumbledore's office during a Pensieve
trip. (He saw the office during the diary trip in CoS, but it was
Dippet's office then.) It would have impossible for him to notice some
change that didn't happen in his lifetime. I don't remember Dumbledore
mentioning anything about the widget that he lost 20 years ago. And in
that time, DD would have noticed a stray object.

I agree. The twitch was very important.

Excellent observation! I'm too burned out to reread all the books tonight,
though <wink>. In the same scene,

The one difference between the present-day office and this one was
that it was snowing in the past; ...

However, despite that claim, another difference is noted later:

I am glad you approve," said Dumbledore, smiling. "May I offer
you a drink?"

"That would be welcome," said Voldemort. "I have come a long way."

Dumbledore stood and swept over to the cabinet where he now kept the
Pensieve, but which then was full of bottles. Having handed Voldemort
a goblet of wine and poured one for himself, he returned to the seat
behind his desk.

We don't really know what happened to that goblet <wink>.

We don't know the spell needed to transfer a piece of soul into a Horcrux
either. While it seems a real stretch, I suppose it's possible that a
miniscule twitch is all it takes to complete the job -- in which case he may
have Horcrux'ed anything in the office.

The reason I don't laugh myself out of posting this is that the rest of the
conversation makes it very clear that D can't figure out why V came to the
office -- he's sure that V knew in advance he wouldn't get the job, so what
was the point of asking? Perhaps the only point was to get into D's
office -- presumably to make a Horcrux of something there, or, as you say,
to steal something to make a Horcrux of later. The problem with the latter
is that D and V were having a face-to-face conversation almost the whole
time, and we don't see V touch anything except the wine goblet. The
possible exception is in the last paragraph quoted above: I don't remember
the office layout well enough to know whether D would need to turn his back
on V to take a wine bottle from the cabinet. But even if he did, the
portraits on the wall surely would have noticed V pilfering something while
D's back was turned (from other scenes in other boooks, they're always
watching when someone interesting is visiting, even if they pretend to be
slumbering).
