A question my son brought up. Could occlumency stop the sorting hat
from reading someone? I'm not sure if the sorting hat reads minds, or
emotions or character.

The hats seems to be happy to give you what you wish; I doubt if you'll need
to use occlumency. If I was the sorting hat and thought a new student was
using occlumency... I would send them to Slytherin!

If a student was well suite for Slytherin, but was strongly opposed to entering Slytherin, what would you do?

I'm afraid we don't know enough about how the Hat works to know for
sure.

Why would you want to block it?

We don't really know how the hat works. What if Lord V could turn it
evil or create an evil version of it? Capture someone and put the
evil sorting hat on his head to get info. It seems to be able to read
some surface thoughts at least. When Harry thougt "Not Sltherine" the
hat heard him. As I recall DD said that the hat was very old and
powerful magic.

It could be quite a weapon if used imporperly. It may have a
differenent type magic than most wizards, just like house elves have a
fifferent type magic than wizards.

The hat tells us that each of the founders put a little of themselves
into it, but we don't know for sure that what they put in counts as
is brains. Molly has warned us to mistrust any magical thing that
can think and act for itself if you don't know where its brains are.
(In some cases, even if you do know... the Diary, for instance.)
However, so far I think the Sorting Hat is okay.

If there is one sorting hat, there could be another. A sorting hat
could be very useful if you want to decide who gets to join your group
and who doesn't.

"So you want to be a death eater. Sit in that chair and put that hat
on your head. Oh, the hat says that your honest, and trustworthy, and
always obey the law, Kill him."

It could be difficult to infiltrate the death eaters if you had to
fool both a sorting hat and LV.

Anything that can read minds, even a little, could be dangerous and it
would be useful to be able to trick it.

Actually, Arthur used the Diary as a prime of example of what not to
trust.

I propose placing the Sorting Hat on the heads of criminal suspects to read their guilt or innocence!
