My theory is that Neville is the 'One' under the prophecy and Potter
is a distraction to Voldemort. Potter gives Neville time to prepare
for battle with Voldemort. Would be an interesting twist to the ending
of the story.
that would be cruel on harry because he was been singled out and has had a
horrible life because of it and then to find out it wasn't him in the first
place...
but the way i see it Voldie could have marked either Neville or Harry and he
choose to go to Harry's first ...hence voldie himself has choosen who will
be the person that has to kill him....

"Was he playing with the Snitch?" said Lupin eagerly.
"Yeah," said Harry, watching uncomprehendingly as Siruis and Lupin beamed
reminiscently. "Well ... I thought he was a bit of an idiot."

It's just a theory I had since Neville and Harry are both born within
the terms of the prophecy. Harry and Neville were twins and were
separated to give the old Order Of The Phoenix the best chance at
survival. If Voldemort kills one of the them, the other still has a
chance to grow up and fight. Neville was shipped off to the
Longbottoms since they were Aurors. Essentially he was raised by
bodyguards and given their name to protect him.
Nice idea, but I don't think it works. When Harry sees the photo of the
Longbottoms, he recognises Alice instantly because she looks so like her
son, so it's unlikely that he's adopted. And Neville was actually
raised by his grandmother, who seems to be a pretty formidable character
but probably wouldn't be that likely to be able to fight off a gang of
Death Eaters. Plus, the OOTP would all have known that this is what had
gone on, and it's pretty improbable that no-one would ever have let
anything slip, even a comment that made Harry suspicious.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if JKR makes _something_ of this whole
'prophecy could have applied to either boy' thing. In fact, I think
it's more likely than not that she's going to do so. Maybe Neville
really will turn out to be the one who kills Voldemort (which would mean
Voldemort would eventually have to 'mark him as his equal' too, probably
in the last book).

All the best,

Sarah

wanted the less capable of the two children hidden. Clearly this
situation would allow Harry to die, which seems to be the direction of
the books anyway. Voldemort kills Harry, Neville kills Voldemort - the
prophecy is still satisfied under this scenario.

of the story. What if you weren't the chosen one, just the spear
carrier as a means to an end? So if this theory is on the mark,
Rowling steals from Star Wars again. ( Luke is the last Jedi? No No
No, now he's got a sibling too hidden from him )
Interesting theory, maybe going a little too far. I only wonder where
Darth Vader will fit into this scheme...

Voldemort could have 'scar'ed/marked Neville in some other way. He did
after all drive his 'parents' insane. I think that would 'mark' a kid
in the non physical sense. The prophecy could still be fullfilled for
both Harry and Neville.

As for the cruelty of making Harry a spear carrier, well their entire
world is at stake here. In war, you have to make sacrifices. Clearly
Book 5 is the admission of compromises. Dumbledore left Harry with his
aunt and uncle, despite knowing he would be poorly treated, in
exchange for his safety.

when did she ever steal from star wars?
Let's see. Boy orphaned as a baby raised by his Aunt and Uncle who told him
nothing about the truth of his parents' deaths. Good rebels struggling against
bad bureaucrats and just plain evil overlords. Boy not told about his special
adeptness for magic/the force. Wise old man adept with magic/the force guides
the boy in his battles with the dark overlord. Boy invited to join the dark
side and turns it down. Boy finds two best friends, one male and one female.
On the surface, the Male is a whining ne'er do well, female is an insufferable
know it all.

Now, I don't think that Neville and Harry are brothers. Neville looked like
his mom, and Harry looked like his Dad. But I bet the Longbottom's were marked
because they knew something about the prophecy.

As a joke, my friends and I brought up this very point about 2 weeks
ago...

Harry and Luke are both orphans who grew up with an aunt and uncle.
The truth of their parents was kept from them for many years. Turns
out Luke's father became the bad guy (Darth Vader) so James Potter
would wind up being Voldemort in this scenario (think about it... we
saw in Sorcerer's Stone Lily getting killed but not James). Hermione
could be the equivalent of Leia, the sister hidden away. We figured
Dumbledore is Obi-Wan and Neville and Hagrid are Han and Chewie.
McGonagall = Mon Mothma. Order of the Phoenix are the Jedi Council.
And we think the reason book 5 took so long was because she had to
wait for Episode 2 to come out! :>)

Feel free to add on. It's ridiculous, but fun!
